Info: Olivine can be found in diferent shapes and forms. The colour of the mineral varies between olive green to yellowish green, dark green, black or blackened (when eroded). Olivine can be dissolved in water containing salt, when eroded, it becomes serpentinite. Olivine is created usualy in magma. It can be contained in many rocks which contain up to 45% SiO4.
How to recognize: Olivine can be dissolved in hydrochloric acid, during the proces from the olivine is created gelly of silica acid.
Found: Olivine was found in the island Zabarjad (Red Sea), Minas Gerais (Brazil), Queensland (Australia), Vesuve (Italy), Arizona, New Mexico (USA), Transvaal (South Africa), in Turkey, Norway and in Germany. In Czech Republic olivine was found in the vulcanite near Semilsko.
Used for: In jewelery as peridot or cryzolite (when the mineral contains iron and aluminium).
