Cuprite

Info: This fragile mineral is usually found in the form of whole agregates or in grains. It can be translucent to transparent crystal with colouration from red to brown with diamond shine.

How to recognize: Cuprite is often covered with a layer of malachite.

Found: In Africa, USA, France, Peru, Chille. In Czech Republic cuprite is found in small amounts in Kalná, Běloves, in Brněnský masív and Slavkovský les.

Used for: In ancient times cuprite was used for the extraction of copper, as it is the mineral, from which the extraction of the metal is the most easiest. Today cuprite is not used for the extraction of copper.
